Intervention/Extension

Hi again! Has anyone out there done a Reading Intervention/Extension block? My grade level team is trying to plan it out and want to put it into action before October. I have never done this before and would LOVE some feedback and suggestions. We are thinking about doing is 3X/week for 25 minutes. Our initial thoughts are that we will be breaking the kids into groups based on their phonics needs and abilities or doing some kind of enrichment activities with the kiddos that do not need any interventions at this time. (Speaking of phonics needs... has anyone noticed more holes and gaps in your students' phonics abilities? Do you think this is because of Common Core?)This block of time will be used for DIBELS interventions in the future.  This will be the first time I am 'letting go' of my babies and I am hesitant to do so! We of course need to have admin approve it but I just wanted to hear from ya'll who have done this before! THANKS :)

I Love Teacher Friends

I was so excited to have my friend, Erica Ladd over at www.thecandidteacher.com, come and help out this week! She was a breath of fresh air. Erica started off with a mini lesson on expectations (she is the behavior guru) in the hallway since she was going to be working with them in small groups out there. My kiddos loved every minute of it and I loved having someone else say the exact same things I say all day!

We have been working on Main Idea and Supporting Details for the last couple of weeks so I thought it would be a great idea for my kiddos to show Mrs. Ladd what they know. She brought in a game from Busybeespeech.blogspot.com. I don't know what the kids loved more, the angry birds cards or getting some practice time with Mrs. Ladd!

My goal for this week is to update you guys more often!! I didn't realize how much growing a little human inside me would effect me day to day! I am exhausted, but boy is she worth it! We will be doing lots of stuff this week with synonyms, homophones, and syllables. I will make sure to post some pictures of all their hard work. Hope everyone had a great 3-day weekend! Here's to a short week 5! Woo Hoo!

Week 2

The high expectations and excitement of week 1 are over and I am spent!! My feet are still throbbing from carrying around my pregnant self all week. On the bright side, I LOVE my class. I also love all the read-alouds that we can do this week.

One of my favorites is My Mouth Is A Volcano  by Julia Cook.

She is an amazing author who used to be a teacher so she completely gets it. This particular one is showing the kiddos how to manage their thoughts and words without 'erupting'. The kids get a kick out of it and learn a little self regulation at the same time!

This week I am busily getting ready for our Curriculum Night. I am hoping to post pictures of activities we have been working on and things that I have made for the parents. Make sure you check back at the end of the week.

Here's to another successful week in Second Grade!

Welcome to The Second Grade Life!

Welcome to The Second Grade Life!  This is my 6th year teaching and my third year in 2nd grade...and so far, I'm in LOVE!  I got married in November of 2012 and we're expecting a baby girl in November 2013. (I have been busy!) It has definitely been an adjustment adapting to my new role as a wife and now a pregnant wife.
Join me on my journey as a second grade teacher, newlywed, and mama-to-be. I hope to share lots of exciting activities, lessons, and printables with you!  I'm constantly on the search for fun and exciting things to do with my kids and I love sharing what I learn!  And I know I have LOTS to learn!!  Here's to a fantastic year in second grade!
